Corten Steel: Built to Weather

Corten Steel: Built to Weather, Not Just Withstand

Corten steel, technically known as weathering steel was developed to do something most metals resist -  change on purpose. Exposed to the elements, it forms a stable layer of rust that protects the steel underneath, rather than continuing to corrode away at it. That layer isn't a coating applied at the factory it develops naturally over months outdoors, shifting from orange to a deep matte brown.

This makes Corten steel a practical choice as much as a visual one. Because the protective layer regenerates itself if scratched or worn, the material holds up to years of outdoor exposure without repainting or resealing. It's why you'll find it used in bridges, sculptures, architectural cladding, and garden or outdoor furniture — anywhere a material needs to handle sun, rain, and temperature swings without maintenance.

Maintenance, in fact, is largely about leaving it alone. Once the initial patina forms, there's no sealing, painting, or treatment required — rain and sun are what keep the surface doing its job. An occasional rinse to clear off any debris such as damp leaves is really all it needs.

Corten doesn't hide what it's made of or pretend to stay pristine. It ages visibly, and that aging is the whole point — a record of time and weather rather than a flaw to prevent.
